The BMW i8 comes from the Germen luxury
car maker - BMW AG. Following the trend of high-tech cars, this super car is a
plug-in type hybrid car which uses the combination of an electric motor and a
petrol engine to power the car. The 2013 German Auto Show was where the
production model was first unveiled. The car was launched in the international markets
in June 2014.
The
costliest BMW car
The BMW i8 is undoubtedly the costliest
BMW car to be launched in India. There is only one variant which comes with 4
upholstery options. It is priced at Rupees 2.29 Crore.
External
options
The BMW i8 in coupe style has a pleasing
front view with the unique kidney shaped BMW grille. The other features include
automatic LED head lights, LED daytime running lamps and tinted glasses. Also
found are electric ORVMs with anti-dazzle function, a sun roof, self-locking
wheel bolts, rain sensing wipers a rear spoiler and 20” alloy wheels. The wheel
base is 2800 mm and the ground clearance is 117 mm.
Cabin
space
The spacious cabin has ample head and
shoulder room. The standard features include an automatic AC with 2-zone
cooling, leather upholstery, leather-wrapped multi functional steering wheel,
smart-key entry and electrically adjustable seats. The BMW ConnectiveDrive
includes 4 top view and side view cameras, BMW Heads-up display and digital
instrument display on a 22” screen. Also there are features like voice control,
Harman touch controller, GPS navigation system, Bluetooth connectivity and
front and rear parking assistance with camera. The boot size is 154 litres.
Braking
and safety
The i8 is loaded with braking safety
features like Dynamic Stability Control, ABS, Cornering Brake Control, Hill
assistance and electric parking brake. Other safety features include 8 air
bags, anti-theft alarm and acoustic protection for the pedestrians.
Engines
The i8 has a 131 bhp electric motor
connected to a chargeable 7.1 KWh Li-Ion battery and a 1.5 litre, 231 bhp
petrol engine for powering the vehicle with a net fuel efficiency of 47.45
kmpl. The total power when both are used comes to 360 bhp and torque 570 NM.
There are two selectable drive modes - comfort mode and EcoPro mode. The top
speed is 250 kmpl.
