BMW has given the i8 a futuristic design and it will
surely have all the people on the roads turn their heads. The sporty exteriors
of the i8 contribute to its commanding presence on the move. The overall design
features a low slung body style, a large hood with a raked windshield and a
stubby back. The distinct BMW kidney shaped air intakes on the frontare flanked
by two laser beam sharp and slim headlights. The doors are dihedral sliding
doors seen in conventional sports cars that open upwards.
Interiors
and cabin
The capacious interiors of the i8 are richly
appointed, exuding the elegance and sophistication of the cabin of a motor
sports car. It features highly comfortable seats, upholstered in finest Nappa
or Alacantra leather. The dashboard gets a colour changing lighting pattern,
digital gauges, and chrome finished knobs and buttons. Standard gadgets in the
car include i-drive infotainment system that features satellite navigation
system, Harmon Kardon audio unit with USB
and Bluetooth connectivity.
Engine
and Performance
Here is the most significant improvement that BMW
has made over the years. The i8 is a plug-in hybrid car that is powered by two
engines. The rear wheels get a 1.5litre three cylinder twin-turbo petrol engine
that produces 213 bhp of power and 320 Nm of torque. This engine is coupled
with a six-speed automatic transmission. The front wheels are connected to an
electric motor that produces 131 bhp of power. This electric motor is mated to
a 5 kWh lithium-ion battery. The combined power of these two engines comes to
362 bhp and 57 0Nm of torque. The i8 reaches the 0-100 kmph in just 4.4
seconds. BMW claims the mileage figures to reach impressive 39.9 kmpl. It
should be noted here that the car consumes only 2.1 litres of fuel to cover 100
kilometres.
Ride
and Handling
The body panels of the i8 are made of carbon fibre
and aluminium which makes it a light car at just 1485 kilograms. Yet it is very
balanced on the road. The batteries are located low in the chassis and within
the wheelbase, which gives it perfect natural balance. The front and rear
suspension systems work in coordination, to absorb the bumps on our potholed
Indian roads.
