Renault,
the well-known French automaker has its operations spread over all parts of the
globe, including India. As it is one of the biggest and fastest growing
automobile markets in the world, all automakers compete for a share here. Although
Renault started its Indian operations many years ago, it did not enjoy much
success until the SUV Duster was launched. This stylish car took the market by
storm, and soon, the name Renault gained more popularity than ever in the
country. Now, in its bid to strengthen its position further, Renault is getting
ready for another launch.
Renault is
on the verge of launching Kwid, a hatchback to woo the small car buyers. This
compact car would heat up the competition in the entry-level segment by taking
on the leaders like Maruti Alto 800 and Hyundai Eon. With the launch of Kwid,
Renault is hoping to break into the most competitive segments of Indian
passenger car industry.
Price – One of the major areas of concern for the foreign
carmakers in India is pricing their cars optimally. Many a times, makers have
failed to come up with right pricing. Hence, numerous foreign branded cars have
failed in the Indian market. However, Renault seems to have done its homework
and have priced the hatch quite affordably. It is said that Kwid will cost
between three and four lakh rupees.
Launch date – The global debut of the car was in May 2015
in India. The exact date of launch of the sales is not yet known. However, industry
reports indicate that the car would hit the roads any time between September and
October.
Design - Renault Kwid will sport an entirely new design
as far as compact cars are concerned. In looks, it resembles a crossover than a
hatchback. As a result, some experts have already started calling this car a
mini crossover. This is mainly due to the plastic cladding on the side and the bumpers
as well as a high set bonnet, which gives it a crossover feel. The muscular
wheel arches make the car look bigger than its actual size.
Features – The high-end variants will offer fog lamps
and wheel covers. The car will have piano black interiors and a digital
instrument cluster. Other attractive features are touch screen Media navigation
system and Bluetooth connectivity (optional), and airbags for high-end variant.
However, ABS might not be offered. Boot space is ample.
Technical details – Produced on the Common Module Family platform
jointly developed by Nissan and Renault, KWID will run on an 800 cc petrol engine
mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox. It is expected to offer a best in class fuel
economy, beating the 22.7 kmpl offered by the Alto 800.
