Volkswagen Cross Polo –Autoportal reviews the flashy car

The fastest growing segment in Indian car market at present is that of crossovers. Volkswagen was the first automaker to launch a cross hatchback in India with its Cross Polo. It was first displayed at the 2013 Indian Auto Expo and was seen on the roads by the end of the year. Soon other automakers followed the trend and the car market saw the birth of many more cross hatches.

Overall Design and Looks

Cross Polo can be said to be a stretched and rugged version of the original Polo and shares many of its features. It carries much more presence than a normal hatchback, yet is considerably smaller than regular SUVs. A thick matte plastic cladding runs through the car’s rear, flanks and the chin which gives the car that sporty look. A thick silver lining both at front and back, sporty roof rails and side view mirrors coated with silver also make it quite unique. The car is raised by 15mm making it look taller and also more suitable for off-roading . Cross Polo is available in Flash Red, Deep Black pearl and Reflex Silver colours.

Interior Design and Features

The Cross Polo interiors are almost similar to the hatch Polo, except the Livon Titanium black upholstery for the seats. Five people can be housed in just as in the Polo hatchback and it has a boot space of 280 litres. The features offered in Cross Polo are the same as to what is on offer in the Highline variant of Polo diesel hatch. A leather wrapped steering, gear knob and handbrake, tilt and reach adjustable steering, height adjustable driver seat, powered wing mirrors, ABS+EBD, twin airbags, automatic climate control, reverse parking sensors and a 2-DIN CD player with Radio, AUX-IN, SD Card USB and Bluetooth connectivity, are the various features on the Cross Polo.

Engine and performance

Cross Polo also carries the same engine of the Polo hatchback - a 1.2-litre TDI diesel mill with a displacement of 1199cc. The CRDi diesel mill produces a maximum 73.9 bhp power at 4200 rpm and 180 Nm of peak torque at 2000 rpm. The power is distributed to the front wheels via 5-speed manual transmission gearbox. It yields a maximum mileage of about 22.07 kmpl.

Our verdict

The 1.2 MPI model costs around Rs 7.08 lakhs, while the 1.5 TDI costs Rs 8.38 lakhs approximately. Thus Cross Polo, which has nothing extra except for a sporty look than the standard Polo hatchback, is almost Rs 2 lakhs pricier than the latter. It is indeed silly to think that an average Indian car buyer would shell out this much additional money just for the added looks.
