Despite the fact that Indians are conscious about the
running costs and the continuous increase in petrol prices, petrol cars still
have been loved and bought. While diesel cars are fast capturing the passenger
vehicles market, petrol cars are also selling in good numbers, thanks to their
relatively lower prices, high performance and longevity of the engine. Some of
the most popular Petrol cars in India are put forward in this feature.
Most of the cars from the Maruti stables fit into this
category. Maruti Celerio, Swift, Swift Dzire, Alto K10, Alto 800, Wagon R,
Ertiga all are highly fuel efficient cars. Yet the most popular one of late
seem to be the Alto. A 3-cylinder, 0.8-litre, F8D-796cc engine which has the
capacity to produce 48 PS of power and a peak torque of 69 NM rides the Alto

just Rs 2.41-3.53 lakhs. The latest Alto K10 comes with an automated

just Rs 3.8 lakhs. It is powered by a 998cc, 3-cylinder petrol engine that

i10, i20, Xcent, Eon and the new Creta are good petrol cars
from Hyundai. The most popular one of these is the Xcent at present. The 1.2-litre,
four-cylinder Kappa engine with variable valve timing generates 82 bhp and 114 Nm
of power and torque respectively. Prices for the Xcent start at Rs 4.66 lakhs
for the petrol powered base variant. Some of the segmental new features, good
mileage and affordable prices have given the Xcent an edge in the highly
competitive car market.
One of the few cars in the market, which has maintained its
sales and popularity over the years, is the Honda City. The old petrol model
runs on a 1.5-litre i-VTEC engine that generates maximum power output of 119 PS
and top torque of 145 Nm. A 6-speed manual transmission and a continuous
variable transmission are available on the petrol range. The petrol variants of
City cost around Rs 7.53-9.73 lakhs. The latest iterations of its premium
hatchback i20, known as Elite i20 is also getting very popular these days.
Renault Duster is another popular petrol car around. The
latest model gets a 1.2-litre TCe petrol engine that is able to churn out 124 PS
of maximum power and 204 Nm of peak torque, apart from the existing 1.6-litre
petrol engine. Priced between Rs 8-13 lakhs, it is a good value for money car
with great performance and advanced features.
